Konkan railway begins just a few miles north of Mangalore. So we can say Mangalore is the southern tip of konkan region.

The line goes to Madgaon junction.

via Surathkal( almost a suburb of Mangalore), Udupi, honavar,  karwar,

And then to Madgaon.

we have the breath-taking Sharavathy river near Honavar and Kali river near Karwar. 

One big problem is  non availabilty of snacks and even tea. while travelling in this line.

.....The train leaves Mangalore central around 5.30 and reaches  Madgaon around 1.30 pm

The travel time  is  thus  8  hours. between MANGALORE and  MADGAON.

BUT THE PROBLEM IS THAT WE HAVE TO TAKE  THE BEST  TRAIN FROM MADGAON TO

PANVEL JUNCTION- THE MANDOVI  EXPRESS  -  which  starts  from MADGAON at 8.30 am 

the  next  day. 

We  can perhaps  stay  in some  nearby  lodge  but  it will  be  ideal  if  we  travel  from Shoranur  junction to  Madgaon  through Mangalore. by  ERNAKULAM -PUNE  SF  EXPRESS. 

This  is  the  BEST OPTION because  this  train arrives  at SHORANUR at  8 am , reaches  MANGALORE at  1 pm  and  continues  its  journey  to MADGAON and  through the glorious  KONKAN STRETCH  from MADGAON  via  some  great  stations in GOA state  and  then to 

RATHNAGIRI  - PROCEEDS  TO PANVEL JUNCTION AT 7PM and  goes  to PUNE  at 11 pm.

so  we  get  the  benefit  of  full  daytime  journey  in a  single  train. 

Enchanting Kerala from Shoranur when the Barathapuzha river accompnies all the way to near Thirur.

We have very prosperous towns like kuttipuram and pattambi, before Thirur.

Then coastal towns like Calicut, Kannur and Kasargode before Mangalore.

If we travel by Ernakulam -pune SF superfast express, we do not have to break our journey. We can continue


After PANVEL we can just  sleep  and  get  down at PUNE and  stay  in some  good  lodge  nearby.

We  can  spend  the  next  day  in sight seeing  in Pune  and  travel back  to  SHORANUR by POORNA express  which  runs  on  saturday  night  only.
